About the workshop
Daantje de Valk is a textile designer, currently studying industrial design at the TU/e. In her project Unknitting as a Knitting Technique she researching a way to reuse old knits in new designs and wearables.
As we all know a vast amount of clothes end up in the bin. Sustainably minded companies try to avoid this by recycling clothes. Recycled cloths they are broken down into a fibre which can be re-spun into a yarn. This process of recycling textiles is energy consuming, mostly degrades the quality of the fibre, or requires blending old material with new materials. The idea behind Valks project is to reduce waste by reducing the amount of steps of recycling between old garment and new. She explores this possibility by researching ways to un-knit and re-knit the yarn.
