Could you please introduce yourself?

I'm Xue, a Bio-fashion and Upcycling designer who is passionate about integrating regenaritive design thinking into my creative process. I believe in the power of design to shape our world and society, and I strive to make a positive impact through my unique design method. I believe that fashion should be a catalyst for change, inspiring others to embrace a more eco-conscious lifestyle and appreciate the beauty of sustainable materials.

Having graduated recently, how do you look back on your studies?

Reflecting on my recent graduation, I can't help but appreciate the transformative journey my studies at Biodesign have afforded me. It was during this time that I not only honed my design skills but, more importantly, I internalized and embraced the profound concept of sustainable design that had always resonated within me. My education at Biodesign facilitated a transition from being a conventional designer to one who possesses the ability to genuinely contemplate and contribute to sustainable systems. This evolution has been pivotal in shaping my approach to design and my commitment to creating solutions that prioritize ecological and societal harmony.

Could you please tell us something about your graduation collection/project?

The Bio-Invasive Textile Library is a win-win solution for both ecology and fashion worlds, realised entirely using invasive plants and fashion technology innovations. Its project uses LISI (London’s) invasive plants as raw materials for fibers and dyes to physically prevent the loss of biodiversity in the region and the inhumane treatment of animals.

Its bio-invasive furs are explored to achieve zero waste dyeing and technical production processes. By exploiting the textiles wasted during dyeing and technology development, further develop related ancillary bio-invasive materials. In the technical part, new textiles are created by innovating diverse technologies such as “implanting”, “felting” and “spinning”, providing fashion designers with solutions in the form of “library.”

Which materials, techniques, programmes and/or applications are you mostly interested in?

The material I'm currently most interested in is invasive species. These are non-native organisms that disrupt local ecosystems, often causing harm to native species and the environment. I'm intrigued by the potential to repurpose these invasive species as a sustainable and eco-friendly material source.

By using materials sourced from invasive species, we can simultaneously address environmental issues while exploring innovative design possibilities. This approach aligns with my commitment to sustainability in design and my interest in finding creative solutions that minimize ecological impact. It's a fascinating area that combines environmental conservation with design innovation, and I believe it has the potential to shape the future of sustainable materials in the fashion industry.

The exhibition you are a part of looks into meaning of regeneration. What does regeneration mean to you and your work?

Regeneration holds a profound significance in shaping the core of my creative work. It serves as a guiding principle that compels me to delve beyond the mere pursuit of sustainable outcomes and directs my attention towards fostering an enduring sustainable ecosystem and process. Embracing the ethos of 'regeneration' prompts me to contemplate our human-centric design needs, igniting a profound awareness of the intricate interplay between ecological harmony, biodiversity preservation, and the rights of animals.

This perspective challenges me to craft designs that transcend conventional boundaries, where the synergy between humanity and the environment takes center stage. With 'regeneration' as my compass, I am driven to conceive designs that yield true win-win outcomes, benefiting both the ecological landscape and our shared environment.

How do you perceive the meaning and importance of community within the fashion field?

Community plays a pivotal role in fashion, not just as a means of self-expression but also as a platform for driving sustainable change. Sustainable fashion communities are at the forefront of advocating for ethical practices, reducing fashion's environmental footprint, and championing fair labor conditions. By fostering inclusivity and responsible consumption, these communities contribute to a more sustainable future for the industry and the planet. In essence, fashion communities are not just about style; they're also a powerful catalyst for advancing sustainability in the fashion field.

How do you view the future of fashion? And your own role therein?

I foresee the future of fashion as a journey towards greater responsibility and sustainability. Given the imperative of sustainable development and growing environmental concerns, the fashion industry is inevitably transitioning towards ethical practices and innovative sustainable alternatives.

My role in this evolving landscape remains that of a problem-solving designer. I'm dedicated to crafting inventive fashion solutions that address the unique challenges faced by brands and designers striving for sustainability while contending with technological limitations.
