Julia Montin

Julia Montin’s collection MADE IN SHANGHAI addresses the loss of value of garments over time, which is especially prevalent in China where delicately handcrafted traditional wear has been replaced by meaningless European designer brand fakes and fast-fashion, often made of disposable plastics. Her protagonist is a modern Shanghai empress, representing the past as well as the present. The collection is inspired by historical clothing of the end of Chinese Qing-dynasty: silhouettes and details are derived from the traditional clothing of the Manchu-tribe, and prints and colours come from the portraits of their empress. The shiny surfaces are created with the plastic tinsels – cutting waste and dead stock from a Christmas ornament factory – sewn between a layer of fabric and tulle. This shiny effect refers to the false sense of luxury as emanated by the illegal designer copies in Shanghai’s street markets.
